A veranda is a wonderful addition to any home, both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

However, if you plan on spending years enjoying your beautiful veranda, maintenance is crucial.

It’s about more than keeping your veranda clean: proper maintenance will preserve your veranda’s functionality, appearance and longevity

From gutter cleaning to keeping your glass and aluminium in top condition, we’ve got some helpful veranda maintenance tips for you.

1. Clean Your Veranda Regularly

Keep your veranda clean, but be careful not to use corrosive chemicals, heavy-duty cleaning agents, or a pressure washer, because you don’t want to damage it.

In your veranda, glass cleaning is simple.

Just clean the glass panels with a little bit of pH neutral cleaner, mixed with plenty of water. Apply with a soft cloth to keep particles from scratching your glass.

The same solution and soft cloth can be used to keep the aluminium frames clean and you should aim for aluminium veranda cleaning annually, cleaning the whole frame at least once a year.

If you have fabric sun protection on your veranda, remove the excess dirt and dust occasionally, using a soft brush or a vacuum set to a low setting.

For stubborn dirt and stains, use mild detergent mixed with lukewarm water, gently applying with a sponge and then lightly rinsing clean.

2. Inspecting and Repairing Damages

Frequently inspect your veranda, looking for damage or signs of wear and tear.

Address any issues promptly, before they become major problems. Loose boards, cracked tiles and damaged roofing can suffer further deterioration if not repaired quickly.

When you repair or replace damaged components, you maintain your veranda’s structural integrity and safety.

3. Sealing and Waterproofing

Since it’s exposed to the elements, your veranda needs protection.

Sealing and waterproofing its surfaces can protect against moisture damage, as long as you use the right products for your veranda’s materials.

Speak to your installation company or check the manufacturer’s website for best practices on protecting your new veranda and how often it needs to be resealed to keep it safe from rain, humidity and other environmental factors.

Be aware, too, that in a veranda, condensation resulting from warm, humid air meeting a cold surface can cause moisture damage. This is unlikely to happen from the outside in, but leaving doors open between the veranda and adjoining rooms can create this problem.

Keep the doors closed, while also making sure that furniture, curtains and other obstructions aren’t blocking any affected areas.

In the winter, open the area for short periods to allow fresh, dry, outside air to circulate and replace humid indoor air.

4. Maintaining Finishes and Coatings

Your veranda will have finishes and coatings, like paint, stains, or varnishes, to help protect it from the elements.

Periodic touch-ups are important, to keep your veranda’s surfaces from peeling, fading, or chipping.

Ask your installer about UV-resistant finishes because these can provide further durability.

5. Care for Furniture and Accessories

A veranda offers outdoor living space that you can personalise with furniture, cushions and other accessories that appeal to your aesthetic sensibilities.

To clean fabrics in your veranda, remove loose dirt, using a soft-bristled brush or vacuum cleaner, then wipe with a soft cloth dampened with mild detergent and lukewarm water. Finish up by rinsing with fresh water.

During harsh weather conditions, store accessories and cushions and cover furniture with protective covers to guard against the elements and extend the longevity of your furnishings.

6. Gutter and Drainage Maintenance

Maintain your veranda’s drainage system, keeping gutters clean and downspouts directed away from your home, to prevent water from backing up and potentially damaging not only your veranda, but also your house.

It’s extremely important to regularly clean your gutters, removing debris to allow water to flow properly and prevent blockages.

Keeping the downspouts directed away from the foundation will help prevent water pooling or seepage.

7. Pest Control and Prevention

Regularly inspect your veranda for any signs of pests, including termites or ants.

It’s important to treat any infestations as quickly as possible and be proactive about using protective measures.

Pest repellent measures like screens, nettings and natural repellents, will deter pests from deciding to share your veranda with you.
